Meet Mark Ruebery
Kaysha Louvain sits down with Welsh musician Mark Ruebery to talk about his brand new single ‘Get Away’
Kaysha: Hello Mark, great to see you again. First, tell everyone a little about yourself?
I’m Mark Ruebery, I’m a singer, guitarist and songwriter. I was born in Newport and went to school in the historic Roman town of Caerleon, where I formed my first school band ‘Hi Frequency’. It was then I started write music and perform, which led on to the Royal Welsh college of music and an album up at Rockfield Studios. Since then, music has been my life.
Kaysha: As we know you’re an accomplished musician, with tours, cruise ships and multiple big name radio show plays under your belt, but after a large hiatus from releasing original music. Was there any reluctance to releasing new music?
I’ve been very lucky to have travelled the globe with music and had some very positive things happen with my original music. But, with that also comes disappointment. Being a solo artist, it’s a lot of pressure and it's just on your shoulders. I’ve found it hard to come to terms with not achieving goals, dealing with corrupt labels and managers. Sometimes, you need a little time out before releasing new music which is exactly what’s happened with myself. So, there was reluctance but us songwriters can’t switch off the need to write, record and perform our own music whatever the end result.
Kaysha: From getting to know you over the past few weeks, I understand we have a lot in common when it comes to the wide variety of music we play and love. Do you think you’ve found your style with this new single?
As with many of my musician friends, we all play all kinds of music to survive. I started off loving rock and blues, studied jazz in music college but I’ve always loved many styles of music. My first album was more rock/pop. Then, on my second, there was a couple of jazzy swing numbers. But, for this new EP, I wanted to get back to pop, similar to my first album. I have absolutely loved writing and recording these new songs very much, so I’ve definitely found a style I’m very happy with.
Kaysha: I understand there’s an E.P on the cards? Have you got any exclusives on that?
The new EP will be out at the end of the year. It features five tracks in the same vibe as the new single Get Away, mixed and mastered by Tim Hamill at Sonic One studios in Llangennech, Wales. The fifth track ‘Here for you’ is a special one. It’s stripped down to only voice and guitar and features a real string quartet, they came in especially. The result was fantastic and it’ll be a great addition and contrast to the other tracks on the EP.
Kaysha: Can we expect any live shows and what’s the plan for the rest of 2022?
Get Away is out 6th June and then I plan to release another single late summer followed by the release of the EP by the end of the year. I’m hoping to do an album launch and some more live shows as the EP gets released. Dates to be announced. I’m very happy and excited to finally put some new music out there.
‘Get Away’ is out June 6th and available on all digital platforms HERE!
