Modern Neutrals - Blue (Review)

Band: Modern Neutrals

Song: “Blue”

Out: August 2nd

Review by: Michael Kennedy

40 years ago sounds a long time ago but the 1980’s seem like yesterday and “Blue” from Modern Neutrals would have been a huge hit with fans of the darker side of the charts - think The Mission, The Cult, Sisters Of Mercy etc. The first two minutes are a lesson in how to build a dark and brooding (menacing?) atmosphere before the whole thing really takes the roof off the place for the last minute and a half!

There’s a shadow of Nirvana running throughout the track and it’s great how everything comes full circle in music because there’s going to be a whole generation of listeners who won’t have heard anything like this before - it’s just us greybeards that will pick out the influences that these guys have naturally absorbed throughout their lives. It’s a great rock track and the accompanying video adds to the darkness with its blues and blacks moving amongst the distorted images. If you haven’t checked out Modern Neutrals - and if you love your rock - you may just want to give this one a spin.
