Feature: The Great Big Hug

The Great Big Hug is not just a band—they are a musical force blending the raw emotion of Southern Rock with an Americana Blues Fusion twist.

Founded in 2022, this critically acclaimed band has quickly become a staple of South-Western Virginia and Eastern Tennessee music scenes, performing over 60 unforgettable live shows in less than two years. Their debut album, I'll Leave the Light On, earned rave reviews, with comments such as "pitch-perfect blues delivered with heart and soul." Reviewers also highlight their ability to craft music that feels both timeless and fresh, seamlessly blending classic rock influences with a modern, arena-sized sound. At the heart of this dynamic group is the powerhouse husband-and-wife duo, Melissa and Chase Johner.

Melissa Johner, the band’s lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, has an extraordinary background in music. A finalist in the 2023 Tennessee Songwriters Competition, she began her musical journey at age 14, touring with a full-time bluegrass band by 16. Known for her powerhouse vocals and heart-driven songwriting, Melissa draws inspiration from legends like Etta James and Beth Hart while maintaining a deeply personal Southern charm. Her ability to take life’s sorrows and joys and turn them into powerful ballads has captivated audiences for years.

Chase Johner, the band’s lead guitarist and one of its vocalists, is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who began his professional music career as a teen prodigy. By 16, he was touring the country, and at just 18, he had the honour of performing at The White House. Over the years, Chase has shared the stage with bluegrass icons such as Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Doyle Lawson, J.D. Crowe, and Chris Stapleton. His career highlights also include leading the first-place bands at the prestigious Galax Fiddler’s Convention in 2008 AND 2009, as well as winning the Richmond Folk Festival Mandolin Contest in 2012. Together, Melissa and Chase create an intense chemistry on stage-- truly a fusion of impeccable musicianship and deep personal connection that makes their live performances magnetic.

The rhythm section of The Great Big Hug is just as impressive. Bob Ballengee, a seasoned drummer and educator with over 30 years of experience, brings a level of finesse and depth to the band’s sound. Having performed in everything from live bands to theatre productions and orchestras, Bob’s knowledge of music theory and percussion is unmatched. His versatility, combined with his academic background, brings an added layer of sophistication to the band’s roots and blues genre. On bass and harmony vocals is Justin McFarland, a musician whose career has been nothing short of impressive. A former member of the award-winning Americana band Ravencliff, Justin toured with acts like REO Speedwagon and Wynonna Judd. His album with Ravencliff topped the iTunes Americana charts, and his touring experience has given him a commanding presence on stage. Justin’s deep understanding of music, honed through both education and performance, makes him an irreplaceable part of the group’s dynamic.

In addition to their collective achievements, The Great Big Hug has headlined multiple community festivals and earned a standing ovation at the prestigious 23rd Annual Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion—a huge music festival near their hometown. They have also been the band behind two major advertising campaigns for large businesses, further cementing their presence in the industry.

Whether it’s their soaring anthems, intimate ballads, or the undeniable chemistry of their performances, The Great Big Hug offers a transcendent musical experience, blending heartfelt storytelling with a sound that resonates across generations. Their live performances are a must-see, with every song delivering the "blood, sweat, and tears" that audiences crave. With their unique genre blend and critically acclaimed artistry, The Great Big Hug is poised to become one of the defining acts in modern Southern Rock.
